A Guide for young leaders

FIRM, FAIR and KIND- A Guide for Young Leaders .

As a young leader I was very cautious and I often played small !

Most new leaders do the same. They’re careful, eager to fit in, worried about upsetting anyone—thinking it’s humility when it’s often just fear in disguise.

It feels safe. It isn't.  The  smaller you play, the more space you give others to step over you. Visibility is key. Leaders must be seen and heard—shying away from the spotlight helps no one.

When leaders play small, clarity disappears. In that vacuum, people start filling in the gaps themselves. Agendas shift, assumptions grow, and standards quietly slip.

Leadership isn’t about volume or ego. It’s about presence. You don’t earn respect by shrinking; you earn it by being visible, consistent, decisive and firm.

I tell emerging leaders this without apology: kindness without backbone isn’t leadership—it’s how standards slip and respect evaporates.

Tips for New Leaders Stepping Into a Role:

Show up. Don’t shrink to keep the peace—your presence sets the tone.

Be clear. Say what you mean and make sure people know what’s expected.

Stand firm. You can be kind without being soft. Kindness without backbone erodes respect.

Listen, but don’t disappear. Hear your team, but don’t let listening turn into inaction.

Lead by example. Your actions matter more than your words.

Balance strength and warmth. Be decisive without being harsh. Be approachable without being a pushover.

Be decisive. Don’t let small issues grow—address them while they’re still manageable.

Invite thinking, not silence. Encourage questions and different perspectives—avoid groupthink.

Own your space. Be present, accountable, and lead with intention.

Takeaway:

“Leadership isn’t about being liked or playing it safe. Your team doesn’t need a silent follower—they need a leader who is strong enough to guide, fair enough to listen, and kind enough to inspire. Step in, set the tone, and lead the way.”
