The weekends in Bishops
Fridays were always special in Bishops – the day seemed to fly bye – everyone was cheerful es[ecially the boarders who had their Permits ready to go home or to the house of their local guardians.
The evening games were played with gusto by the others but for those going on permit it was a quick bath and then stand near the MOD’s table and wait .
6.10 was the bell- by then most of the boys on permit had already left- some with guardians and some on their own. A few smaller ones could be seen waiting patiently- then forced to study if no one had come to take them- there were tears shed as well and at times no one turned up to take them home ……………….. so they were forced to dinner where they stared around aimlessly and refused to eat !.
After dinner there was a mad rush to the tuck shop – cool drinks ( at first it was the Adeshir drinks for Rupee 1 per bottle ) later I think some other drinks were also available. Greesy samosas and chips were also purchased. The boarders also carried with them the after dinner peanut toffee to eat later .
The chairs had already been laid out by the boarders just before dinner and then it was movie time.
Jagos was the Movie Man ( for those who don’t remember he was the old gentleman who had – for eons supplied movies to Bishops). As he got older his man used to show the movie- it was that old spool movie – westerns and others- all movies were English and clean ! If by chance there was a hint of one of “those scenes”, the man showing the movie put his hand over the projector till that scene was over and all the seniorr boarders howled in dismay !
At times reels were mixed up and after a villain had been shot dead he suddenly appeared again and everyone would throw up their hands in dismay .
During the early 80’s the TTC girls from St Mary's would come for the movie- another highlight for the Sr boarders who imagined that the teachers never knew what was going on .Mr. Nelthropp/ Mark Young/ Inamke/ Nader etc – I hope you are reading this – so many others as well – you know who you are !!
Movies would get over by about 10 pm and the sleepy boarders would then have to carry the chairs back in 5’s – after kicking them over at a speen that was unbelievable.
Sr boarders would then order dinner from out – the servants of Bishops obliged for a fee and all sorts of food would find its way in the dorms. A few daring boarders would also slip out to East street for a quick bite and a few were caught by me and others but surprisingly no action would be taken except a GET BACK TO SCHOOL AND DON’T YOU EVER DO THIS AGAIN.
Later all dorms had gates fitted ( some boarders managed to get around them by climbing around from outside the building ) This was Dangerous to say the very least as the dorms were three floors up ! ie Lunn and Cambridge .
Saturdays were for pocket money/ day leave / Town leave etc and usually peaceful.
Fridays and Saturday evenings also witnessed many staff vs boys Volleyball matches ( Do not like to mention but can’t help saying that the boys tried their best to win in vain and this will sure draw angry comments and sarcastic ones too- Hari/ Sasane/ Pandhre/ Jadhav/ Mark/ Sable/ Inamke/ Mubarakai./ Youhan !!!!!
Not sure if the Friday routine is still followed but it was sure fun and everyone enjoyed weekends in Bishops
