Christmas and New year

Christmas will come and go in the blink of an eye. One minute you are putting up the Christmas tree, doing last minute shopping, getting a makeover in an attempt to look younger, decorating the house and planning your parties, and the next you are putting away the dirty dishes, throwing away the accumulated garbage, labelling the packed decoration boxes and wondering why you feel bloated and exhausted.

Then there is the X’ Mas post mortem – how so and so’s cake tasted, the ill-fitting dress worn by a friend , the boring party , the small talk (read gossip), the boring sermon by an ill prepared priest , the overcrowded malls – the list goes on .

Santa goes back to wherever he is supposed to have come from, the reindeers are put out to pasture and sanity is restored once again.

Oh yes you also have gifts which you will probably recycle!

OMG where did the year go – the months really flew by !

And then everyone starts contemplating the New Year – fingers and toes crossed – hoping for good tidings.

Yippee it’s New Year’s resolution time. Research has shown that about half of all adults make New Year’s resolutions. However, fewer than 10% manage to keep them for more than a few months and that too is stretching it a bit!

The origin of New Year’s resolutions is quite interesting. The ancient Babylonians made promises to their Gods at the start of each year that they would return borrowed objects and pay their debts on time. The Romans began each year by making promises to the God Janus, for whom the month of January is named. Thereafter bedlam has reigned with the whole world jumping on the bandwagon and continuing, what has now become a craze

New Year’s resolutions are quite a pain but “What’s your New year’s resolution”? is a question on so many minds in January every year so everyone starts thinking in advance so as not to feel out of sync during upcoming conversations?

We all know how easily people can fall into bad habits and why on trying to give up those habits it is easy to relapse.

New Year’s Resolutions usually come in the form of lifestyle changes and changing behaviour that has become routine and habitual can be hard to do.

Google the term ‘NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS’ and there are umpteen pages on the same.

The most common resolutions made every year around the world are: losing weight, doing more exercise, quitting smoking and saving money. All undoubtedly look good and meaningful.

Who doesn’t want to fit into clothes better , drop a size or two, be able to run a mile without panting , feel healthier and have some sort of a healthy bank balance .

The main reason that people don’t stick to their resolutions is that they set too many or they’re unrealistic to achieve. They may also be victims of the “false hope syndrome”. False hope syndrome characterized by a person’s unrealistic expectations about the likely speed, amount, ease and consequences of changing their behaviour.

So here is my new year’s resolution- to try and be a better person than I was in 2022 – for myself and those around me. Also to do some more reading, writing and speaking. I love all three.

And yes - my book !

Not exactly SMART targets, but ok for me I guess.

On buying peas

I wonder what Messi did today!

Probably relaxing and letting ' the win' soak in.

Meanwhile in another corner of the world another man went to buy some provisions.

The last item on the list was fresh green peas.

Ok the man was me.

Unfortunately, and as luck would have it , I ended up behind an elderly man who had either never shopped for peas before, or else he had a strict, fastidious wife, who had sent him to the market with strict, specific instructions as to how to choose the peas as they did not come cheap.

This poor guy picked up one pea pod at a time and looked at it from all angles.

By the way - how many angels does a pea pod have ?

Not sure what the qualities of a ' good pod' are but he was doing a thorough job.

After choosing about 10 he suddenly realized that the good ones were underneath, so he emptied the bag and started afresh with his new found discovery.

The minutes dragged on. I was fuming. Was tempted to say something but restrained myself because he looked rather old.

Began picturing his wife - wondering what she looked like , especially when angry !.

Then suddenly she appeared out of nowhere. She was younger for sure and well attired.

She literally pulled the bag out of his hand and peered inside.

She was not happy, because, before you could say ' Messi' or ' Goooooooal' She emptied the bag of peas while sniggering contemptuously.

She then moved to the side and took carrots instead.

I quickly scooped up some peas, ( they were all good) ,got them weighed and moved to the payment counter.

Some people are so slow - others so strict .

I , me and myself today

 Saw no one walking today

Just I, me and myself.

Put one leg before the other

And before I knew it

I had completed my walk.

It was a trifle dull and dreary today

One lone cat recognised me

And ran up for its morning treat

The ducks were nowhere to be seen .

They were either asleep

Or had been eaten by hungry cats.

Well the latter is a bit of an exaggeration!

But it is a possibility isn't it?

The music I chose to listen to today

Was slow and easy

BB King, Muddy Waters

And the fantastic Clapton

With

' Have you ever loved a woman'.

No reflection on the mood

Was just not in the mood

For Elvis and his Rock and roll!

Another day - another holiday

A day older

We need to bake one of these days

Yes- Christmas is on my mind.

Keep Christ in Christmas

 So it’s the 16th December 2018.

Nine days to go for Christmas and there is excitement in the air.

Thanks to Facebook , Messenger, WhatsApp and the like , many of us have been receiving our FIRST CHRISTMAS CARD , OUR FIRST CHRISTMAS TREE , OUR FIRST SANTA , OUR FIRST SNOWMAN over and over again from the 1st December onwards . Not to mention being HIT by the FIRST VIRTUAL SNOW BALL .

Nice – thank you - but a bit too much and over the top at times .

Cakes and cookies, wine and chocolates are being made , Turkeys ordered and then there is that wild clamour to purchase gifts in the malls . More often than not there are the usual end of year sales where everyone ends up buying stuff they do not need in the first place .

Christmas Trees went up during the first week of December and those who could not find last year’s decorations, as they had been put away safely and now can’t be found , went out and bought new ones – only to find the old ones in perfectly good condition a few days later !

Then there are the curtains and the cushions- the new crockery and the crystal glasses kept for those special occasions .

Not to forget the urgent requirement for new clothes and shoes which suddenly become a necessity despite the cupboard already being stocked with recent purchases .

If you are a lady , then this is a time consuming operation . Many shops are visited and bored, tired looking salesmen can be seen putting back dozens of pairs of shoes , folding meters of material and putting clothes back on hangers – obviously someone looked and walked on to the next shop where the same exercise was repeated .

Most gentlemen are adept at quick shopping and are less fussy than their female counterparts . They know what they want – go in and get it and the job is over and done with before you can say Ho Ho Ho !

Remember I said MOST . I know of many fusspots who spend ages and are somehow never satisfied with the goods on offer . These are the bespoke guys who take pride in giving measurements and going for umpteen trials- good for you .

Schools are closed now and the children are suddenly in everyone’s way – wanting to eat meals at odd times , itching to go out , asking for gifts , begging to be taken to the park .

All in all it’s a season of fun – friends to catch up with , time to travel if you so desire , great weather , plenty to eat and not to forget – WEIGHT TO GAIN !

And by the way for those Christians like me – let’s not forget to keep the CHRIST in Christmas.

Be kind to one another !

Spectacles

While many believe that Benjamin Franklin invented spectacles, actually it was Salvino D'Armati, a 13th century Italian from Florence. In reality, I do not care who invented them, as I am not very fond of them in the first place.

Some believe that shades or dark glasses were worn even earlier than that to protect the eyes from the bright sun.

I started wearing spectacles in my 40’s and dark glasses about ten years before that.

This morning I woke at about five am, as I always do to read the newspapers and then spent around twenty minutes searching for my glasses. You can put this down to old age, amnesia, and the onset of dementia or whatever. You can call me careless, sleepy head or a forgetful old man- I DO NOT CARE!

I finally found them – they had slipped between the end of the sofa and the cushion. Thrilled, I opened the door, picked up the newspapers and sat down to read them. Only then did I realize that these were my “distance glasses”. The “reading” glasses had been near my pillow throughout.

Now I know you are sniggering at me having different spectacles for reading and distance but that is me.

I did try the progressive ones a few years ago for a few days- three to be precise- got splitting migraines, felt nauseous and put them aside for good.

So now, I carry two pairs around and that is the problem. Am usually wearing one and have the other in my pocket. Most of my shirts do not have pockets and if I am not wearing a coat, the second pair is usually deep in the trouser pocket.

This causes them to go out of shape and often become lopsided soon. I am quite careless with spectacles as well and often leave them lying around – on office tables , on peg tables at home , beside me on the sofa , on the seat of the car , in the receptacle between the car seats etc . When reading, the second pair is often on my lap and the obvious happens- I get up in a hurry and the glasses are on the floor. I have stamped them, kicked them and once smashed them as well.

I am constantly being advised on how to look after them – get lanyards, use a case, treat them with respect, don’t let them lie around- this advice goes in from one year and out of the other .

No, I am not proud of the way I treat my spectacles but I am so fed up with the two pairs.

As a young boy I remember hearing conversations of people having used their spectacles for years – they never broke, were damaged or lost! How they managed with the same pair for years beats me.

In addition, I have not yet mentioned something else. Last week I suddenly put on my glasses (in the morning) and was definite I was losing my vision. Everything was a blur in the right eye. Thoughts of cataract and glaucoma raced through my mind as I rushed to the washroom and washed my eye and the glasses too.

Only then did I realize that the lens were badly scratched and my eyes were fine. Thankful for small mercies!

Therefore, off I went to the optician to have the lens changed. He recognized me and seemed rather pleased – do not think any of his customers go through four pairs of glasses in a year.

While I sit at my computer, keying in this article, I am wearing my old spectacles. I used the old distance ones while driving this morning. Once I get the newer pairs back, I will give these in for a similar lens change – you guessed it right – both these pairs are scratched as well.

Do you know how tea was discovered

Woke at 4.45. Tea, papers etc done by 5.45 and out for a walk.

Was the first 'walker' and it felt nice- 'early bird catching the worm' and all that!

Took some quick photos for posterity and did three rounds of the lake, inside an hour.

Then sat down on a bench and surveyed the scene around me.

The cats, the ducks, the little duckling and its siblings, the pristine lawns , the fountains ,and the morning walkers, who had all now appeared- familiar sights.

There is one very tall man with a large dog who runs around the lake at a frantic pace- both morning and evening. Thankfully I was seated, because every time he passes me , I feel like a midget. He is probably six and a half feet tall and still growing !

Thought of getting home and having another cup of tea. However I felt like sitting for a while longer as the air was so lovely fresh air.

I decided to try and meditate as I had read how useful this was. However my mind began drifting, and hence I took out my mobile and began scrolling through the news.

Surprisingly the topic that popped up first was ' tea' .

Are these mobiles cleverer than we know? .

Have always had a sneaking suspicion about this.

There was an interesting article, on how tea as we drink it ,was discovered, which had me rather intrigued.

Apparently there was this Chinese emperor guy named Shen Nung, in 2737 BC.

Like many of you , he loved drinking hot water for good health! So his servant was boiling some for his majesty.

Some dead leaves from a tree fell into the boiling pot. No - his servant nor he took them out -"so they continued to boil.

He then drank that water and yippee- tea was discovered.

A bit of a strange story ,but who cares , we have a lovely beverage ,thanks to him.

Cats, dogs and humans

So while on a walk this evening my attention was drawn to cats ,dogs and humans.

You see, it's a lovely one and a half kilometre walk around a large lake. There is an observation I made today.

When someone is approaching from the opposite side, both people seem confused as to which side of the track to walk on. Believe it or not I have often had to step aside at the last moment to avoid banging into the person approaching from the opposite direction. Odd isn't it?

What strikes me as strange is that very few nod, smile leave alone wish each other the time of the day. I tried it on a few occasions with minimal success . Have stopped now. Don't want anyone to think I am trying to be extra friendly!

As we pass each other, we humans look down at the ground, look at our phones, look at the scenery around, up at the sky or just stare blankly ahead. Probably a trifle rude but that's the way it is.

Very much like cats- no emotion. All that's missing is the hissing !

On the other hand, watch maids walking their master's dogs. Or for that matter, the owners themselves. As soon as the dogs see their counterparts approaching they are all excited.

They are whining , barking, straining on their leash and so excited. The closer they come, the more the excitement.

As soon as they are together they are jumping, barking in excitement, licking each other, running around and one can perceive the pure unadulterated joy.

They put us humans to shame.

We are busy putting up walls and fences - busy wearing 'masks' and avoiding others just because we ' don't know them'.

Dogs are good examples aren't they ?

Plenty for us to learn indeed.

Teach your kids

 Teach you kids.....

That earthworms don't bite

And butterflies don't sting.

That gekos are timid

And many birds sing.

That gardening

is a great way to pass time

And walking barefoot is fun

That staying indoors is unhealthy

 And plenty can be gained

From playing in the sun.

That reading books

 is not outdated

And board games

Teach us more than we imagine.

That music is a stress buster

And playing an instrument

Is a great add on to a CV.

That cuts, bruises and scrapes

Are part of growing up

And very normal

And that arguments and disagreements

Are not wars

 and cause no permanent scars.

That it's okay to lose

And no disgrace to place second or third.

That winning is great

But being defeated is a learning experience too.

Teach them these and more

And teach them well.

Ducks and me

Up with the rising sun and out for a walk - also in the mood to do a bit of writing so looking for inspiration.

There it was ,right before me - a single little brownish duckling, towards the corner of the lake. He was young and precautious, and he saw me for sure because he stared brazenly without flinching.

Oh, that guy was all alone and sure was having fun. He was not in need of any company either!

He was ducking and diving- bobbing in and out of the water and fluttering his wings every now and then. This was unadulterated relaxation fir him.

He swirled and twirled, and did umpteen three sixties, while keeping a keen eye out for feline predators patrolling nearby.

He then took a deep dive and emerged with something in his beak. Probably a morning snack ! He definitely saw me moving closer to take a photo, because he moved further, towards deeper water. He continued darting about, splashing and frolicking for a while, and then, like a mini speedboat departing, he swam away stealthy, leaving a pattern of tiny waves behind him. He was definitely making the best of the amazing weather.

I walked on. I have a bit of a paunch I am trying to rid myself of so I increased my pace.

Then at the other end of the lake , on a small ledge, beside a fountain, stood five white adult ducks.

They had their backs to each other and seriously looked bored and dejected with life! I stood and observed them for a while . They stood motionless ,staring aimlessly.

There was no frolicking , no diving, no swimming , no fun. They fluffed their wings occasionally, while using their flat beaks to clean the feathers under their neck. Obviously more of a habit than a necessity.

All that was missing were their mobile phones, if you are able to make the connection!

Got me thinking of human beings.

It's fun when your young . You are bursting with energy and you're always raring to go. However, as you get older, you become dull, monotonous and uninspiring. You lose the spring in your step - the laughter dries up and you resign yourself to the years ahead- to pantaloons, slippers, spectacles and medication!

Don't let it be that way. Life is for those who truly want to live it.

And remember- you can have fun on your own as well, because at times, company can be boring.

Forget about conforming to the expectations of society. If you want to have your 'me time', go ahead and have it.

It's your life after all .

Am sure the next time you see ducks, you will think of my little story.

On being grateful

Went for a walk this morning. There was a bit of a nip in the crisp air. The pristine lawns, with the lake near by, looked awesome. The whole area was spotlessly clean and the hedges had been freshly trimmed. The ducks made me feel like having a swim. Then I looked at the sky and saw clouds with the rays of the sun forcing themselves through. Beauty personified.

I immediately thought of poetry- it was there for the taking.

I sat down excitedly and started keying in words. Nothing like a descriptive poem to inspire readers.

Then I remembered that I was colour blind, and was not being able to do justice to nature, in all its glory. ' That's not fair', I said to myself.

I put the phone away and walked home dejectedly.

And then realisation dawned....

I felt grateful. Immensely grateful

I could see

I could walk

I had a home

Breakfast would be ready.

Being positive is paramount.

This is officially the first day of my vacation and I feel good.

Thursday, 8 December 2022

I am no Christopher Columbus , no Fridtjof  Nansen, no Ibn Battutta either.

At times I am of  the firm opinion that I was not born to travel - travel is indeed anathema to me .

Do I like to travel ? Yes - and that indeed is the unexplainable paradox  !

Don't get me wrong -   I like to travel but to be frank I enjoy the destination but  literally detest the journey.

No I don't think that explanation carries weight .

Its not actually the journey but the build up that gets under my skin - that gets me all jittery and irritable and a trifle nervous as well . A trifle ? Give me a break !

When someone at a party walks in with a swagger, joins the conversation , talks with  style , says he lives out of a suitcase for 20 days a month and has just flown in that very evening from Timbukto after visiting Belarus and never even had time to shave  , I  am ready to bow in reverence .

How do they do it ? These demi Gods of the skies need to get a star named after them .

Listen to one of my stories  now and be the better judge .

I had to travel to India - to Delhi to be precise . It was a 3 day trip and should have been a breeze .

For me it was a hurricane. Thunder and lightening thrown in for effect .

Booking an online  ticket was the first hurdle  - this is easier said than done . There are umpteen flights and far too many airlines . Too many options confuse me. There were 207 flights from the UAE to Delhi . Its a 3 hour journey approximately for  goodness sake so show me the best flights first .

However the first 30 options  or so showed journeys which lasted anything between 18 and 30 hours in totality .  There were 3 stop flights  , 2 stop flights and one stop  flights . They were mini whirl wind tours of India from the sky . You missed the dirt and the grime and the pollution as you were at airports and airports are cleaner than most cities . (At least most of them are till you visit the toilets )  You landed and took off till you were giddy  and nauseous.

Pray where were the non stop flights? Should they have not been the first option?

Finally I got to the non stop flights .

After keying in many details I saw that the flights were full on the day I had decided to travel on . Murphy's law in play.

I start all over again and come to payment options . It says that they will send me a secret number  via sms which I need to key in to verify payment . I wait and yes you guessed correctly - NO MESSAGE

I take a break and an hour or so later I start all over again. Presto- the fares have increased by 100 rupees . Now that's what I call ' making a fast buck'

Tickets booked finally and I heave a sigh of relief.

Lets cut to the chase . Packing is always fun . Depending on the weight the particular carrier allows . What do you take by way of clothes . My mind goes back to that demi God who " just threw some things into a duffel  bag and was out of the house in a jiffy " I bow again. Pray fair Sir how do you do it ?

If you minus the weight of the suitcase itself and leave a kg or 2  for the faulty weighing scale at many  airports , there aren't very many options . So I pack the minimum  and hope against  hope  that it will suffice . The suitcase is opened , checked, weighed  and closed any number of times - and this too , many hours before departure . OCD probably ? There is always something more to put in, something extra to take out and something to change . And then there are the keys - tiny key holes make it even worse.

Then- I must have something handy to wear in the hand luggage - what if my suitcase is lost ?

Then its the ticket , the passport , the money , the pouch , the keys , the pen , the phones, the charger, the multi plugs, a book to read, the I pad , another charger...................

If its an early morning flight I set two alarms because although I get up early on a regular basis , something tells me that on the day of the flight I may go into a stupor and wake late . I then get up a couple of times in the night to check the time and ensure that I have set the correct alarms and that things are not on silent mode or any such nonsense. You never know with these gadgets - they tend to play up at the most inopportune moments.

I then try in vain to hypnotize myself to sleep, to count sheep , chickens or whatever . When the alarms finally do go off I am already dressed.

Breakfast - no- it may upset my stomach . Who knows what a fried egg can do when its in the mood !

Will the taxi arrive - will the driver be on time . What is the car breaks down .

The luggage was put near the door the previous night - saving time in the morning !

I have never bathed faster. I usually have a shave the night before .

Am at the airport after having checked my ticket and passport umpteen times - don't want to risk leaving them at home do I ?

Don't want to land at the airport with the wrong passport either .

I also check my visa and passport expiry dates - just in case - you never know when they will expire and I will be stumped . I

If you thought this was stressful wait for the next steps.

I always - yes always get static electricity shocks from the trolley . Disgusting .

There is a long line of passengers waiting to check in . Why is everyone travelling just on this day . Why so many children as well .  After what seems like eternity I am at the counter .

These counter guys and gals know how very important they are to us travelling mortals and they sure make the most of it .

Always worried about the weight of my  luggage - have paid for excess quite often - but not when travelling alone so why the tension ? Don't ask me .

The luggage is weighed - it always seems to weigh a kilo or two more that what the weighing scale showed at home but no issues - still within limits . Sigh. Chuckle to myself- am learning to beat the system . No money to be paid.

The problem is  in the next step - If I have not done an online check in then will I manage an isle seat- you see I am claustrophobic and I just cannot sit anywhere else but in the aisle seat .

So I try to sound humble, simple , friendly etc I smile - it always  works . No clue what I would do if it did not . "Mr Guzder- I have managed to give you an isle seat " The voice floats towards me on a cloud- I am in seventh heaven .

Now comes the dreaded Passport control- what if my name clashes with someone who has been blacklisted ? I know with the combination of my First and surname there is a very slim chance of this happening , but then one never knows - Murphy's law and all .............

I am asked to look into the camera - the man / woman at the counter does a double take - Is something wrong ? Do I resemble someone dangerous ? Is this the day I have been dreading - will I be taken away for interrogation ? Handcuffed . Who will I make a call to ?. I rack my brains and keep a name in mind .

Nothing of that happens - and I move on but I could have sworn that the person at the counter almost sent for a superior officer - just to make sure I was who the passport said I was !

Its now the body and hand luggage check .

I deposit every piece of metal on my person into my hand bag - watch , belt , mobiles , purse . Will they ask me to take off my chain - I hope not as I can't.

I spread my legs , raise my hands and try and look as un - threatening as possible. Surely the guy wont ask me to step aside . The ticket is stamped . I say thank you loud and clear . I breathe deeply .

I go through without a scratch  but my bag seems to have vanished .

Then I see it coming- very slowly  - then the guy pulls it back to check again . Oh My God - what have they found ?

Has someone slipped something into my luggage . Am I being framed . A knife ? Drugs? a large pair of scissors ? A gun ?  Nail clippers !So this is it - the day I have dreaded all my life .

Everyone gets their hand luggage and moves on . I am told to open mine .

My mouth is dry - where the hell are the keys . I fumble - I sweat - I find the bunch of keys - which key is it - where are my spectacles - I find them and put them on - No no no- they are my distance ones.

Where are my reading glasses . I find them . Now where are the keys. I must not lose my ticket and passport in this  confusion. Panic sets in .

I open the bag - my pressure has gone up - my heat beats fast . The guy asks me to empty my bag . He whispers something to a colleague . I struggle with the zip . They look at each other and at me .

I try and act casual and take  everything out of  the bag . Its worse if a lady is checking the contents - they nit pick even more .

I am asked to explain a small packet of Indian coins / why so many keys / a diary with a long pen - (maybe that was the tool I was going to use to hijack the plane ). Then yes- there are the nail cutters but they don't think I can do much harm with them and so they let them pass .

They find nothing -  nevertheless I am asked to hand over my Ticket and passport and the details are noted . The ticket is stamped again .

I guess they have to do a thorough check of a certain  number of passengers daily - I am usually one of them  .

Maybe its the look on my face and the general anxiety . It shows.............

Its over - I am through. I go aside - back goes the wallet , the mobile phones etc etc etc . into my pockets . Have I forgotten anything .

Where in heavens name is that passport again . Its playing games with me for sure .

My ticket seems to have taken off without me and I panic - its  Ok - its in the passport and in the side pocket . Who put it there ? Not me . Who cares -  and all is well .

I have survived - the journey can begin .

I sail through the flight - the food- the drinks - the loo - the seat - the guy beside me who keeps dozing off on my shoulder .

I reach my destination - the whole procedure is reversed - Passport control , luggage scan , hand luggage scan .

Where is my ticket .

I have been asked strange questions though.

Where had I come from .

Why was I visiting this city .

When was I going back .

Where did I work . Was I travelling alone .

My bladder is bursting . My mouth is parched .

-  then in the blink of any eye I am out and walking  free .

I am safe and have lived to travel another day .

Lady drivers are the best

When I have nothing to do, I tend to do dangerous things- LIKE THIS.

Dear lady friends, colleagues, family and others.

NO OFFENCE MEANT.

THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A JOKE.

PLEASE DON'T CUT ME OFF YOUR FB LIST.

PLEASE DONT BLOCK ME ON YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS.

I am just getting old and losing it so smile and give me some leeway.

AND BY THE WAY - SOME LADIES I KNOW ARE AMAZING DRIVERS !!!!

YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE-"RESPECT !

However.....

Most men complain

Not of the sun, wind or rain.

Not of unrequited love

Heartaches or pain

But of WOMEN DRIVERS.

And these are their laments.

To put it simply

They say they just can't drive

Though they think they can.

They indicate left and turn right

Or else they don't indicate at all.

They make random stops

And never can decide

Which lane to take.

They ride the brakes

And speed through amber lights.

They care little for zebra crossings

Because they see no zebras.

They use the high beam

 with wild abandon

And blind oncoming drivers.

You often see them sitting pretty

When the light turns green

With lipstick and eyeliner in hand

Deeply absorbed in looking good

And don't get me wrong

They do!

They drive too slowly

Usually in the fast lane

And dare others to overtake them

Or drive so fast

The speed would put Michael Schumacher

To shame.

As for parking ....

OMG

When that's happening

Give them a wide berth

Lest a collision occurs

And you get the blame.

So if your wife's already driving

Always keep money tucked away

For the dents, scratches and crashes

And if she intends learning

Pray - don't stand in her way.

( Literally and Figuratively speaking )

Christmas is round the corner

 Listening to Christmas carols

Somehow makes me sentimental.

But they are a staple in December.

Jim Reeves, Daniel O'donnell

And the rest.

Today was very relaxing

In the middle of an extended break

No suit and tie for once.

Sitting out in the morning sun

Pottering around the little garden

While planning what to bake

How and when .

Ingredients to be sourced

And preparations to be made.

Nothing too fancy this year.

So..

Will I bake or will she?

Doing it together is what often happens

Followed by arguments

As to the method to use

The weight of ingredients

And what to mix first!

Was thinking back a few decades

When people sent and received

Innumerable Christmas cards

And of the wizzened up postman

who did a big 'Salam' on Christmas morning

When he delivered the last few cards

And got a 'baksheeh'

And a plate of goodies.

He was followed by the 'dhobi'

And a few faithful helpers.

We would string up the Christmas cards

Across the mantlepiece.

And count them too

They added to the Christmasy feeling.

When I was a young brat,

Helping mince the peels

And decorate the tree

Was my job- partly .

Fun times.

Some of you may not know what

a mincer is or a mantlepiece either !

It doesn't matter .

Those are memories I always cherish.

Xmas and New years

Makes me nostalgic

And I think of you !

And please don't let me start

On the 'Auld lang syne'

Not a big fan of it either.

I've seen people almost 'tear up'

The holiday season

Is round the corner

Good cheer and good wishes.

Shampoo vs conditioner

What's with these companies that make Shampoo and conditioner? - truly exasperating.

So imagine this scene .

I am having a bath ( now don't over imagine). There is water streaming in my eyes. The toilet is steamy ,as I like the water hot. It's like a steam room in there.

I then decide that I need to shampoo my hair.

There are a few shampoo and conditioner bottles for me to choose from.

However, these manufacturers ensure that the words ' Shampoo' & ' Conditioner ' are never printed in bold print. They are in a small indecipherable print and the lightest shade possible.

So here am I in a steamy toilet, obviously not wearing spectacles- don't forget the water - squinting to read whether it's shampoo or conditioner.

It's next to impossible.

Often I lather in conditioner first. Then, realising the blunder, I rinse it out and attempt to use another bottle. If I am lucky it's shampoo. Then back to conditioner again.

Can they not print the words clearly?

So irritating .

It's even worse in hotels.

There are 3 bottles in a line. Same size and same colour.

One is shampoo, one is conditioner and the third - shower gel.

If that's not confusing then what is - especially when you are rushing to get ready for a meeting !

An exotic recepie

How did I never hear of this before. It's easy and will save you money every month.

Above all, it's quick , easy and anyone can make it

Take 3 spoons of sugar.

1 spoon of baking soda

6 red chillies.

A pinch of talcum powder

A half spoon turmeric

2 cloves

A half cup balsamic vinegar

2 table spoons honey

2 table spoons brandy.

2 pods of garlic

And a cup of milk.

Put in a pan and boil on a slow fire for 10 minutes . Keep stirring clockwise.

You will see the mixture turning frothy and thickening.

Add a dash of mustard .

This will cause it to rise abruptly so be careful .

Strain through a muslin cloth .

Cool down.

Put in the fridge till cold.

Then add nut meg and 2 teaspoonful of vanilla essence.

You will now have a creamy paste.

Next get a sheet of aluminium foil and spread evenly over - use a large plate.

Now freeze .

Not sure what you will do with this

If you have read till here you know precious little about cooking , baking or whatever.

Follow me for more exotic recipes.

A romantic rendezvous

 Early morning on Juhu Beach

This cute young couple

All giggly and in their twenties

Obviously came for a morning rendezvous.

They spread their little mat on the beach

It was flowery and rather pretty.

Their carry bag with a few packets

Of some savoury items was unloaded

Off his back.

From her purse she produced

A bottle of Sprite

Which she then gingerly poured

Into two plastic glasses.

She offered him one

And they both sipped simultaneously.

He slipped an arm round her slender shoulders and she snuggled closer

Resting  her head on the side of his arm

I looked at them and smiled

So did another elderly couple passing bye.

The gentle waves danced around their feet

Love was in the air.

Then out of nowhere

Like a bolt from the blue

A football came zooming in

Probably intentional

Because that's how many loving couples

Are told not to become

Too comfortable or too romantic

In these areas!

The ball hit him on the back of his head.

The glass flew from his hand

Spilling the liquid over her pretty pink outfit.

He got a bad knock

And collapsed in a heap

But being the man of the moment

He jumped up

Dusted himself off

And looked angrily around for the culprit.

About fifteen urchins sniggered back at him.

Their arrogance and defiance

Was palpable.

I expected a confrontation.

However...

Allowing her to be the better judge

They packed up and walked away

A trifle embarrassed

I felt for them

For their innocence

And their budding love life.

Thus ended their romance for the day.

What a morning !

Have you ever

 Have you ever………

Have you ever opened up to the world

About your hopes, your dreams, your aspirations, your fears, your life?

Do people know the real you

Fragile and unmasked?

Are you apprehensive of being thought of differently if they do?

Looked at contemptuously?

Being scorned or ridiculed?

Would it make a significant difference to the life you live?

Would you lose friends, gain admirers, or both-

For telling it as it is- raw and unfiltered?

Would it shake your confidence to such an extent

That you end up alone and in therapy?

Or could you tell them your story audaciously,

Smile contentedly,

And then sit back confidently,

While a raucous drama unfolds

Before your very eyes?

The self-appointed actors would be gleeful

The dialogues often terse

The audience - aghast.

There would probably be umpteen

Twists in the tale

With curveballs aplenty!

But life would go on …...

Our education system

Jeremy Bentham, (1748-1832) jurist, philosopher, legal reformer, economist, and utilitarian once said, “There are two types of people in the world- those who divide everything in the world, into two kinds of things, and those who don't.”

Similarly, I believe there are two types of teachers in the world- Those that make a difference in a pupil’s life, and those who don’t. The same goes for schools.

I had quite a few amazing teachers, whom I remember fondly.  One or two, however, left a lasting impression and made a difference in my life. I guess, what made them stand out is, that they were true to their profession – not necessarily highly qualified, but extremely passionate about what they were doing, and masters of their subject. When they explained something – one understood and never forgot.   Their ardour and passion was truly infectious.

Now, this is a question I ask so many working people today – ‘Do you love what you do”? It’s something we all need to think seriously about.  I have often heard people say, ‘I hate my job’.

If given the opportunity to start all over again, I am positive I would choose the same profession, because I love it, and it has given me so much more, besides money.

I started teaching in 1980- have been in education ever since, and still enjoy my job although, unfortunately, I don’t teach anymore in the true sense of the word. I mentor, and coach, while attempting to motivate and inspire teachers and school leaders, but nothing can replace the energy in a classroom of forty-plus pupils, all eager to have a good time!

I have worked alongside passionate, patient, intelligent, educators. I have seen energy, engagement, interaction, collaboration, and excellent communication at close quarters.  There have been lifelong learners and really kind, understanding adults who have been ready to listen while answering the vaguest of questions, from inquisitive pupils.

However, like many others, education is a challenging profession where you don’t only have to keep pace as a teacher, but attempt to be one step ahead. You can’t play catch up – you must lead the pack, who will always be hot on your heels. There is no time for slacking, lest you be left behind.

But hasn’t that always been the case? I remember teaching and interacting with extremely intelligent pupils in The Boys High School, Allahabad, The Bishop’s School in Pune, and in both Modern High and The Millennium School in Dubai. When in India, Encyclopedia Britannica often came to my rescue, and so did teachers and administrators, more learned and experienced than me. That helped me to always go to class well-prepared, and in control. Yes, pupils did stump me with tricky questions at times, but I made sure to return the next day with the correct answer.

I have some questions on my mind …….

How effectively are pupils being educated today?

There are multifarious things to consider, and times are changing rapidly.

Are parents and teachers still shouting instructions?

Are teaching methodologies changing for the better?

Are the present-day curricula suitable, and are they being modified when found necessary?

Are classes pupil-centric and student-led?

Is ‘teacher talk’ reducing or at least being kept to the minimum?

Is progress visible and quantifiable?

Are parents involved in their ward’s education?

What about care and support? Are pupils safe?

Are we conducting background checks on teachers before appointing them?

Do children find time to play? By play, I mean ‘play outside and run, jump, skip, get scraped and bruised’?

What about parents fearing that something awful will happen to their wards if they get into an argument or fight with the neighbor’s children?

Is play unsupervised? What about ‘helicopter parenting?

Are we responsible for bringing up nervous, anxious kids?

Are we in the midst of an epidemic of anxiety?

Are music, dance, and drama given sufficient importance in our schools?

Good pedagogy is inclusive - Are our schools truly inclusive?

Are we getting into a quagmire of over-testing, excessive benchmarking, and comparing?

So much has changed since I first went into a classroom as a teacher forty odd years ago - Has our education system kept pace? Are we educators keeping pace?

Is the entire education system, the world over, crying out for a drastic overhaul?

Can you overhaul a broken system? Is just tweaking it sufficient, or do we need to take a bold step & reinvent it, to get ahead of the times?

The questions are varied and many of the probably answers, vague.

I often read about panels of experts meeting to deliberate on how to improve student performance, but their discussions are primarily focused on benchmarks & test scores. Here is my point – while both are definitely principal indicators of academic progress and attainment, they are certainly not of paramount importance.

Universities and Colleges weigh test scores very differently, and no matter which college you're applying to, test scores are more often than not, not the overriding factor. Colleges give a lot of weight to grades and the rigor of your classes.

For decades now, schools have concentrated on the three C’s – Conformity, Compliance, and Competition, although it is a well-known fact, that life is all about diversity! Our planet thrives on diversity and it is the hallmark of human existence.  Human intelligence does not equal academic ability, and while we shout from the rooftops about differentiation, our education system seems to be based on standardization, and thereby hangs a tale.

Gone are the days when teaching was a monologue – today learning is a conversation.  More personalized, self-paced, and self-directed teaching and learning is the need of the hour. Pupils are even more curious than before. Literally and figuratively speaking, they have the world at their fingertips. Our one size fits all curriculum, on the other hand, does very little for creativity. “If you look at a list of skills and content areas that teachers are expected to cover, creativity rarely gets top billing, although research is showing, that creativity isn’t just great to have, it’s an essential human skill — perhaps even an evolutionary imperative, in our technology-driven world”.

It motivates pupils to learn, lights up the brain while spurring emotional development, often ignites a spark in hard-to-reach and easily bored pupils, and is an essential job skill for the future. One distinct and visible positive that is being seen more frequently now, is forward thinking schools, led by enlightened leaders, that are moving away from the transactional methods of instruction, toward a more relational approach to teaching & learning, with flexible classrooms, paired with ever more robust and immersive virtual environments.

Talk to pupils at random, and one strand is usually perceptible in the underbelly of the conversation- ‘they feel stifled’.

It’s not that they don’t love to learn- it’s not that they don’t love their school or their teachers – it’s just that they are definitely not enamoured the system. They don’t find it student-friendly, it does not motivate or inspire them, it’s impersonal, artificial, and tends to cramp their natural instincts.  No wonder, a few million pupils drop out of school every year – alarming, to say the very least.

We need to put kids in a real-world, authentic learning environment during the school day, and provide them with the tools they need, to be successful.   Technology is the language children of today speak, and something they thrive on and enjoy.

I vividly remember attending a leadership program at The Tuck Business school at Dartmouth, a few years ago. A learned speaker picked up a mobile phone and asked as to how many of us allowed pupils to carry phones into the classroom. No hands were raised. He said he was utterly surprised, and predicted that in a few years the only things pupils would take into classrooms and lecture halls would be mobile devices – prophetic words indeed.

I doubt anyone expected the ‘internet’ or the world wide web, or even thought about something like this a few decades ago, and here we are today, with it impacting every facet of our existence.  So, what are we predicting for education thirty or fifty years from now? Frankly, no one has a clue and that’s no surprise!

In one of his famed Ted talks, Sir Ken Robinson tells us about a chat he had with Paul McCartney of The Beatles fame. Paul told him that he was in the same school as George Harrison, and the music teacher thought they had no talent worthy of note!

When the incomparable Elvis Presley was in school, he applied to join the ‘Glee club’ and was rejected, as they felt his voice was not suitable.

The same thing continues to happen even today – very often our “normal” educational system fails to see and feed a student’s potential.  In fact, far too often, the potential is practically squashed and brilliance goes abegging.

So where do we go from here?

“While there are certainly inherent benefits of traditional rote learning and using standardized benchmarking & testing as a measure of performance, we know the next generation will need far more abstract and interchangeable skills; from fighting climate change to keeping up with the global digital revolution, the future generation of problem solvers will need to overcome some of the world’s toughest obstacles, by thinking in new and creative ways with bold ideas and the determination to challenge the impossible”. UNESCO study.

One thing is for certain, and this is no rocket science – If schools leave pupils with a neutral or negative footprint, they have no chance of success, and future generations will have every reason to complain, that they were shortchanged by the system.

Today, as educators, we are ethically obligated to serve the learning needs of all children. Hence, in order to do the same,d  it becomes  our moral duty to fight for change, or go down the drain with the flow.

Not everybody

Not everybody wants to see you win

Not everybody is happy at your success

But win, succeed and be proud.

Hold your head up high

Because you deserve the adulation

And the accolades

Even if its just you

Giving it to yourself.

Yes we need to pat ourselves

On the back from time to time

And say 'well done'

While smiling into the mirror

Without waiting for external validation.

To expect praise

Just because you know you deserve it

Is like willing it to rain

When your fields are parched.

It should happen

It could happen

But usually it's wishfull thinking

And it doesn't.

What then?

Wither away and perish?

No .

You must learn to water your fields yourself.

Or else die waiting.

Very early this morning

 Very early this morning

As half the world slept

And the other half

Went about their daily lives....

Very early this morning

As the early birds rose

To catch the proverbial worm

And exhausted barn owls

Retreated to their dingy barns...

Very early this morning

As two legged predators

Returned home after a night

Of debauchery

And the four legged ones

Unwound after a lengthy chase...

Very early this morning

Yes, extremely early this morning

Without so much as a 'may I'

I swallowed a lizzard.

It could have been a slug

As it was slimy and tailless

But slugs don't climb

Into six foot high shelves

To nestle in porcelain mugs

Do they?

So a lizzard it was!

All of an inch long

Wet, slimy and tailless.

Don't cringe, make those faces

And say yuck yuck yuck

It was me - not you.

I had seen it the night before

Had scrambled to find a newspaper

No not to kill

But to scoop it up

And set it free among the plants

But this little monster

Was having none of that

Probably it had other ideas

So he or could be a she

darted off and vanished in seconds

Apparently to live another day

And then this morning

Very early this morning

As I prepared to have my 'cuppa'

For no fault of mine

Nor of 'lizzie' either

It was all over.

RIP.

Silence

For the last few days, I have been alone at home – except for the cat, and I have enjoyed some intentional periods of silence. No TV, no music- nothing. It was almost a revelation – I enjoyed it and will attempt to indulge myself more often.

We live in such a vociferous world, and it’s getting rowdier by the minute. If you think about it – walks in secluded areas- like woods, beaches, or just simple treks, fill us with a sense of tranquility. They help us clear our minds, think, strategize and focus.

I vividly remember going for a rather long walk in a forest area in Wiesbaden, Germany some years ago, and it was serene to say the very least. I guess that’s why more and more people are going for mini breaks, to cabins in the mountains, resorts in the hills, or to secluded houses, surrounded by lush and dense forests.  The idea of investing in farmhouses in India was probably started with the need for ‘silence’ in mind,

“Nothing strengthens authority so much as silence” Leonardo da Vinci.

Never a truer word was spoken.

Go to a meeting, and everyone is focused on being heard.  The silent ones are looked at with disdain. Isn’t that strange? Is listening considered a weakness in today’s noisy world?  Is it imperative to say your piece  before everyone else?

Innumerable experts and quite a few research studies have confirmed, that in our clamorous world, time spent in silence can bring numerous health benefits. Though an absence of sound may suggest emptiness, you may discover that dialing down the noise levels, offers surprising fullness for the body, mind, and spirit. Modern-day ailments and conditions like insomnia, distress, anxiety, deafness, blood pressure, ADHD, restlessness, and a feeling of general malaise, are all connected to excessive noise in some way or the other. It is for this reason that health professionals, ecologists, and even hobbyists, have gone to great lengths to seek out the quietest places on the earth.   Today, our daily routine, and our very existence are swamped with noise, and we are to blame because we love it.

Wake in the morning - switch on the music.

Nothing to do - put on the TV

Get in the car - the radio is there for company, or we are calling someone just to chat.

Television and the phone are certainly both culprits, and interestingly our best friends too! Phone conversations have become considerably longer, and the time spent staring at the idiot box does precious little for our health. In the present day and age, we often become rather uncomfortable in the disconcerting silence, and rush to join the cacophony at the slightest opportunity!

Watch people out for a walk – the majority either wear headphones or are engrossed while talking on the phone. Then there are the honkers and the hooters, in some countries, and they pride themselves on the tone and volume of the horn at their fingertips – a most annoying pastime, and something I detest.

The external stimulus of noise follows us everywhere and lessens our power to concentrate, and we are to blame. We have become so accustomed to deafening noise that it fails to bother us. I looked at a video yesterday, where music was being blasted at full volume, rather late in the evening, in a residential society in Pune.  Something was being celebrated and that’s fine – but at those decibels?

It’s about time we realized the value of silence.

She loves me

So I feed some cats in a particular location and quite enjoy the same.

Have come to realize that cats are definitely very smart cookies. Mark you, these are strays.

I carry nothing in my hand, I don't have a bell round my neck announcing my presence  nor do I carry a torch. I don't call out to them either.

It's just a pouch in my pocket and not even a bag or a bowl.

However there are about 8 or 10  cats who seem to recognise me.

When I am about 25 mts away I see them scampering towards me. No, not all together. They hang around in strategic areas, but once they spot me, they  dart towards me.

While some come mewing , purring and rub themselves against my legs , the more timid run along in the bushes beside me , literally imploring me to feed them .

Now it's not like I am the only one there . In fact there are dozens of walkers but these cats leave them alone and seem to know that ' I am the one'

Cats often get short shrift on the perception of loyalty and intelligence when compared to dogs.

However they are pretty smart and loyal too.

We often comment about cats being aloof and  standoffish  but the truth is that they just show their love in a very different way to dogs.

That being said ,  I caught hold of our cat this morning - held her firmly - looked deeply into her eyes and told her in no uncertain terms, that she better get her act in order, and show me some more respect and love.

She turned  rigid, growled,  hissed, tried to scratch me and charged off.

So much for my little pet.

She loves me - she loves me  not.

You are a winner

 Hang in there

And believe

That the best is yet to happen.

Self belief is not easy

But once you master it

You ride the wave.

But like all rides

You will tend to go under

Now and then.

At times,

fearful - that you are drowning.

Then miraculously

you surface-

You breathe deeply-

You wipe away the tears

That temporarily blinded you -

And you smile

Because you know

You have survived

And will continue to do so

Because you are a winner.

Stop procrastinating

 Stop procastinating

And wasting  precious  time

Worrying about what may  be

Or how things will finally pan out

Let it not become a fixation.

Instead

Work on your story.

On your characters,

On your plot

On the setting

On your plan

On yourself.

Are you ready to begin?

To take that  first step?

To trust the process?

Put your apprehension, anxiety and doubts aside

And go for it.

Never wait to be fully prepared

For that perfect time or perfect moment

To arrive

Because the perfect state

Does not exist.

When will the time be right?

When will you be fully in control?

Maybe never !

So then what?

Stick in a rut?

That's for losers!

The time is now.

Make a start

Step gingerly if you must

But make a start

And see how far you go.

More often than not

It will be further than you imagined

And you may surprise yourself

With inner strengths

 You didn't realize you possessed.

Strengths which lay dormant

For extended periods

As latent fears controlled you

Held you back

And not only told you

What to do

But how and when to do it.

Far too often we are so busy

Encouraging, supporting and helping others

That we put our own lives

On the back burner.

We are always waiting.....

For advice, for guidance, for support

For someone else to point the way

For someone else to permit an action

For the gun to be fired

The flag to be raised

The whistle to be blown

And soon that becomes the crutch.

An excuse to stay put.

For long periods of inertia

When progress is nil.

Days go into weeks

Weeks into months

And months into years

Our life ebbs before our eyes

And thereby hangs a tale.

We are the makers of our

Own destiny

And in order to forge ahead

We must first step forward

Take the reins

And start conditioning our minds

To expect the best.

Workplace

 Me at the workplace

past , present and future .

Not peals of wisdom- just simple things I believe, have helped me do fairly well, for over 40 years in education .

Understanding my  role and working diligently

Sitting quietly and  observing

the cacophony

Saying no, politely yet firmly

Ensuring no one attempts to push  me around

Refusing to compromise on principles

Speaking up when necessary

Feeling amused at silly behaviour

Following rules, because that's what

rules are for

Getting the job done

Working hard but not killing myself

Watching the work life balance

Learning to prioritise

Learning to delegate

Listening attentively

Avoiding unnecessary office conflict

Not believing in'Group think'

Keeping personal life personal

Skipping petty politics

Swimming upstream at times

Remembering it's not a popularity contest

Striving for excellence

Being respectful but not subservient

Not assigning blame

but holding myself and others

accountable

Collaborating and being a team player

Attempting to motivate and inspire colleagues

Avoiding stressing myself or others out

Prioritising trust , gratitude and reputation.

Being  focused on the job at hand

Sticking to schedules

Being forgiving and understanding

Not bending over backwards to please

Staying  committed to the organisation.

This is life

 I remember the first day

The first time

The exact  place

The precise moment

The reason

I had to go, out wearing a mask.

I felt a trifle strange

Rather embarrassed and odd

Believing all eyes would be on me.

In reality

No one bothered.

In fact

Most looked away

Or down at their feet

Believing everyone was looking at them!

A cough or a sneeze spelt danger

A sore throat or a cold spelt doom

Add in a body ache for good measure

And you were avoided

Like the plague.

Days moved into weeks and

Weeks into  months- years

Masks and gloves were hot topics

And no one left the house 'uncovered'

The pandemic ruled

With a ferocity unparalleled

In our lifetime.

It was hell and mayhem interwoven

And humanity was at it's wits end.

Those afflicted

Were not sure if

They would live to see another sunrise

Many didn't.

Tears, lamenting, gnashing of teeth

Death.

And then today

I felt the joy of going maskless at last!

Suddenly

There is a sense of freedom

Of immense relief

I hope it lasts.

But many are  still wary

Still on their guard

Still not sure

And who can blame them?

We have had it bad

'He is on a ventilator'

'She is critical'

' He has been admitted to hospital'

'She is no more'

Sentences that left us reeling

Words that left us speechless.

It will take time

To come to terms with

What we have been through

It will take time and courage

To go maskless

It will take time

But it will happen

We will heal

This is how things work

This is life.

Certainly not rocket science

A few tips for success.

Wake early

Either do some reading or writing within the first 15 minutes- it gets the mind alert and working - wordle too!

Spend some time 'thinking' and 'planning'. We are so busy that  we hardly spend any time thinking . It's one mad rush.

Slow down. Life is not a sprint  or a non stop competition.

It's more like a marathon, so pace yourself.

You can't do everything so learn to delegate. Don't worry about someone else doing the job better than you .

If they do it then they deserve your post.

Hence keep learning and be ahead of the game.

Stop micro managing all the time- give people space.

Give others time to learn ,improve and deliver.

Don't be harsh on colleagues or subordinates or on yourself for that matter!

Set reasonable targets and give sufficient time

Be kind - it costs nothing, and releases your endorphins ,as well giving you a feel good factor.

Try and help someone when you get the opportunity.  It can be a ' small help' but it could often 'make someone's day' a little brighter.

You don't have to be the best looking , the best dressed or the most popular to do well in life.

Forget fate and destiny. Those are excuses to make for lazy slackers. Go ahead and plan your own life.

Luck has a part, but hard work never fails.

Be consistent.

Wake up, dress up and show up for work regularly ,irrespective of your mood. Don't make excuses to miss a day's work. Bad bosses come and go.

Family first - slot the others in as you desire.

Save for the future. It's never too early to start.

Your first job may pay you a paltry sum but it's better than nothing . It gives you valuable experience for the future.

My first job paid me about 500 rupees - I have that appointment letter stored somewhere. I must share it.

I worked hard and was not always satisfied.  Like so many other,  I too had a few bad experiences with superiors and bosses along the way, but I dug in for the long haul and came through with a few scars to prove it.

I  avoided taking leave, worked through innumerable summer vacations to earn more and kept taking on more responsibilities while learning on the job.

I observed others closely and gained valuable leadership experience.

I learnt what NOT to do as a leader.

There is one thing you must do- be THANKFUL .

Today I enjoy sharing those experiences and tips with others.

Pain

 Can we actually feel

Another's pain , sorrow or suffering?

No one truly knows what it's like.

It could be anything

But with our guess work

And misplaced sense of importance

We don't even come close.

It's so very easy to sympathise

While throwing empathy aside

Haven't we all been the receipents of

" It will get better soon"

" You will get over it "

" Don't worry - it's nothing "

" Cheer up "

" Good times are round the corner"

" Look on the bright side"

" It could have been worse"

" Don't stress"

Not to forget the clichéd

" Every cloud has a silver lining"

Have also had a pseudo intellectual

Come up and say to me some years ago

" When winter comes ,can spring

be far behind"

These words and phrases

Flow effortless off the tongue.

People may genuinely mean them

Or they may just be glib talk

But the next time

When an opportunity presents itself

Think before you utter them

Because misplaced sympathy

Is as counter productive

As negative empathy.

No one can truly feel another's pain.

But have you ever given it a serious thought ?

What feeds your spirit, fires your soul

And fills your life with meaning?

You could be a painter, dancer, musician,

Rich poor or in between

Fat, thin, tall, short.

Atop the ladder

Or still climbing

A mathematician or a science buff.

A magician, a teacher or a monk

It does not matter

Not in the least.

But ask yourself this ....

What fuels your imagination?

What makes your heart sing ?

What makes you tick?

Become your own Sherlock Homes

And come up with some answers

They may surprise you !

You need not align

With what others find meaningful

Or force yourself to contribute

To social  causes

that others swear by.

It's never too early

It's never too late

To delve into your soul.

Let the hunt begin

The answers will be rewarding.

Vacation mode

I woke to gentle morning rays

And sprinkling rain.

Tiny black and white birds

Flitted about excitedly

Whistling and warbling

Tunes so melodious

While two inquisitive crows

On the ledge below me

Stared, hopped and cawed-

Raspy news broadcasters-

Attempting  to dominate the peaceful surroundings -

wake the world,

And spread misinformation!

A rather large verdant pasture

Yet unclaimed by

Multimillionaire builders

Welcomed a few hundred, obedient sheep

Hearded by a wisp of a girl

While early morning walkers

 and sprightly joggers

Sprinted up the hill

Filling  me with guilt.

But who cares!

Kids frolicked in the park below

Not a worry in the world.

It's another day to do as I please

To loll, scroll, stroll,

 plan and dream

Of what else to do

On a cool monsoon day.

Just doing nothing

Is oh so relaxing

I am on vacation!

Catastrophic is the word

I sat dumbfounded

Staring in utter disbelief.

How could this happen to me

And why?

A death is a death is a death.

I felt the world closing

In around me.

Choked and speechless

I looked around for help

But none was forthcoming.

To compound the calamity

It  was pouring

As if the heavens were mourning

Along with me.

I held her gingerly

And turned her over

 ever so slowly

Not wanting to cause

Any further pain.

I contemplated the next steps.

Acting fast was imperative

Time was of essence.

Disposal and burial was not an option

Never crossed my mind.

An expert practitioner was consulted

An examination done.

A quick postmortem followed

Furitive glances were exchanged.

There was a glimmer of hope

I was told.

It would cost me but that was secondary.

Four hours later

She was back to life

I was over the moon.

When your phone dies on you

It surely is catastrophic.

COMA

 COMA

What if you opened your eyes one day?

And saw everyone looking down at you and smiling

Parents, relatives, and friends.

Tears of joy flowed down their cheeks

Some looked shocked and dazed

Others talking animatedly

Many whispering and giggling.

Your fragile eyelids flicker in weakness and disbelief

You lie bewildered and perplexed

trying to comprehend the total disorientation

The strange scene unfolding

Before your bleary eyes.

People rush in and out of the room

Which you recognize vaguely.

You seem to be drifting on a calm sea

Or is it a fluffy cloud

Of a strange consciousness?

But every time you open your eyes

Things look clearer.

A medical practitioner saunters into the room

A nurse scurries in behind

You don’t seem to recognize them

He is beaming and calling you by your name

You realize now that YOU are

The center of attention.

You have questions galore

But sleep calls some more and you doze off

Time lapses

A few more days of this drowsy slumber?

You have no clue whatsoever

Of time- place- day

Your eyes open clearer than before

But precise body movements are sporadic

And at times your head throbs

As if your brain is about to spill.

You venture to ask a few probing questions

But you mumble incoherently

When? How? Why? Where?

People tell you to stay calm

That all is well

That the worst is over.

The worst?

At last, you smile a timid smile

You sense a perceptible change

As realization starts to dawn

And the fog begins to lift.

White walls, Tubes, monitors, machines beeping

Why do the few people around you look so much older?

Palpitations worry you and you clutch at your chest

As people scuttle around.

More whispers and smiles aplenty

You begin to feel stronger by the day

They finally say you have been in a coma

It’s been ten years – give or take a few weeks

Strangely you felt no pain and no sadness consumed you.

And while you slept a long sleep………….

The world continued to turn on its axis.

Wars were fought and thousands were killed

Royals got married and people rejoiced

There were natural calamities & pandemics

That shook the very core of the universe.

Glaciers melted, and the green cover was lost

Drought, storms, earthquakes and floods caused havoc

The world over

Terrorism raised its ugly head ever so often

While crazy lunatics shot people at random

In so-called developed countries.

Planes mysteriously went missing

People took to some strange pastime

Called the ‘ice bucket challenge

And ‘Gangam style’ was the song of the decade.

Mandela, Malala and Trump

Were the most googled names.

Economies rose and fell

Something called ‘Brexit’ troubled Britain

And a movement named ‘Me too’

Got perverted men in hot water

Creating headlines far and wide.

The Epstein and Weinstein scandals

And Prince Andrew’s escapades

became sensational stories.

You had blacked out,

 you had slumbered

In a stupor – in a trance

No one knew the how and the why

But now

After years of nothingness

Things begin to feel different

You have finally made your way

Through the dark ominous tunnel

And every beam of sunlight

Now spells hope.

A rectangular world

 Thought for  the day...

We seem to be living in a rectangular world!.

Except for the clock and flowerpot in my office , everything else is rectangular.

It's the same at home. Except for crockery and cooking vessels, it's a rectangular world all  around me.

I guess that's the easiest shape to mass produce .

Nature on the other hand hates the shape- probably detests it .

That's why we don't have rectangular plants, flowers , trees, hills, mountains, rivers or seas.

Cameras with round lens take rectangular photographs and no body part of ours is rectangular either!

Is it our unintentional fight with nature?

I presume rectangles are just  omnipresent  creatures determined to box us in, and there is very little we can do about it .

No inspiration today

On some days there is no poetry and no story, and despite good intentions, your  mind is like a clean slate- or an empty vessel - whatever you prefer.

And you sit at your computer pondering the way forward and hoping to inspire the world.

You cannot fathom the ' empty mind syndrome' because it usually doesn't happen to you .

You make a beginning and a few words later, hit the delete button.

You start again, and go a little further, but once again the words don't flow, as they are apt too.

This is silly and a trifle preposterous.

Delete, delete, delete, till you are utterly frustrated .

You take a short break hoping against hopes that something will inspire you.

Nothing happens.

No inspirational ideas - no eureka moment and no insights whatsoever.

Panic begins to set it.

Should you write about a childhood experience? Should it be a teen escapade ?

A long lost love ? A dream ? What about working woes? Procrastination? Something futuristic maybe?.

You sift through one topic after another and manage to come up with zilch.

This is disgusting to say the very least .

What's with me ?

I am beginning to feel like a complete idiot - a  failure and rather powerless to boot.

They say that one is often motivated when sitting near water.

Now that's an idea if there ever was one.

Well there is a lake close by, but wouldn't I look like an utter moron sitting in the burning sunshine near a large lake and staring at a laptop?

Even the cats who greet me in the vicinity every evening are probably  asleep elsewhere.

The four white ducks are usually  crouching under the overhanging shrubs near the edge of the lake at around this time.

It's not going to happen.

No Michael I say to myself - there has to be another way.

Wait- I am a dimwit to even imagine, I will be able to produce something constructive today.

Ok I have it.

I think I'll take a nap .

Let's take forty winks, drowse, a siesta , doze, snooze or just put my head on the pillow and sleep.

Keeping it simple !

They say sleep can be inspirational.

So here's the plan.

I've put the Ac on 18 degrees. The drapes are  drawn. The room is dark. The bed looks  welcoming .

I will live to write another day.

For now it's adieu.

I wish I was a cat

 Random silly thoughts.

Have you ever wished you were a cat?

A tame house pet.?

You laze around all day

You are fed well

Everyone gives you plenty of

love and attention

They want to cuddle you

And play with you

And kiss you

And you put up your price

And act snooty

And they still say ' how cute"!

Then you slip out into the garden

And they go crazy

Searching for you

And it makes you feel special

Coz you know you have them

Eating out of the palm of your hand

Or paw or whatever !

Then they  rattle your bowl

Promising you treats.

And call your name in desperation

While you peep at them

From under a bush or a chair

And you say to yourself

' it serves them right'

While sniggering !

Then when you are finally fed up

Of sitting alone and getting bored

As it's warm outside

You get up and casuslly saunter in

Without so much as a ' by your leave'

And they are thankful

And all smiles

And they thank God that

You didn't decide to run away.

Makes you feel

Oh so special.

Their generous hearts are overwhelmed

And they decide to get you

Pampered and spruced up

So an appointment is booked

At a fancy pet spa

Costlier and sillier

than the one for humans

You come out feeling

Bathed and bruised

brushed and dried

Drained and stressed

beyond measure

And smelling like an

Overpriced  powder puff

If only they knew

How much you detested this

Utter nonsensical humbug

You get home

And they are all cooing and smiling

And clicking pics

On their silly phones

While calling your name

Expecting you to pose.

Stupid humans for sure.

They ought to get

Their act in order

All you want to do however

Is rush to your litter box

And let it all out

It's been two hours of torture

Have they forgotten ?

But they are determined

To shower you with more affection

And the madness continues unabated

Till you hiss and

Pretend to be annoyed

Tail waving and all

It's fun to see them scared!

Finally they back off

While you make it to

The litter box.

Then relieved

You tuck in

And  go to sleep once again.

In a minute

You're in dreamland

It's a cat's life after all

And they should know

That cats rule.

The good old days

Do you wish you knew they were the good old days before you grew older ?

For the present generation, these are the days that will be referred to as the good old days 25 years from now.

Strange isn't it?

Between the ages of about 15 and 30, human beings are in their prime, and those are the most enjoyable years of their lives ,and hence those become the benchmark for ' THE  GOOD OLD DAYS'.

However, paradoxically speaking, they are good days and some of the toughest as well.

You're finishing school, thinking of college and what next.

If your smart and ambitious , you have some plans in place if not it's  let's see' when asked about what your plans were!

It's also the age when one is maturing physically, mentally and emotionally and those are additional challenges to cope with.

Then comes the job search and the quest for a suitable opening followed by looking for what one hopes is the correct life partner and then the wedding tension &fun.

Before you know it there are kids inbtoe and all at once from ' baba and baby' you are ' sahib and memsahib'!

And then you are refered to as ' that middle aged couple'.

Time flies over us and leaves it's shadow behind.

Early morning ....

Ever wonder why ducks often swim so fast. Fish too!.

Even in a tank.

Nothing to do

Nowhere to go.

No plans for the weekend

Silly thoughts I know

But they enter my brain

And get me thinking .

Moths too

Near the lake this morning

Determined to enter my ears, mouth and nostrils

Actually only the left nostril

My nose is crooked you see

So the right one  would be

A bit of a squeeze.

One did enter

And set me off on a sneezing frenzy.

Morning walkers backed off

Suddenly moved to the grassy patch

Pretending to pluck flowers

From overhanging boughs !!

Covid still scares doesn't it?

Then there are those paid to walk dogs

Standing and chatting on their phones

While the poor cannines whine to move.

I need to go home.

THANK YOU

A thought for the day …….

Thank you, is a phrase that many of us probably use daily.

However, of late, it seems to be going out of style, or to put this in the right context – is being used insufficiently.

Here is the thing- Are we using it enough, or should we be doing much better?

It is often the unsung heroes and the tireless blue-collar workers, who end up getting the least thanks although they deserve it the most.

There are others too who could do with being thanked more often! Parents, children, family, colleagues & friends. Not too sure what actually comes in the way?

Is it embarrassment, a couldn’t care less attitude or just plain absentmindedness?

Is it due to the fast pace of life we are leading?

Do we just take too many things and people for granted?

Are we too busy to show gratitude or do we feel it does not matter any longer?

Maybe we feel that we ‘pay a tip or a salary’, so that is sufficient!

Positive psychology emphasizes the fact, that any form of gratitude, is strongly linked to well-being and happiness. Being thankful, in the simplest of ways, is shown to improve our personal relationships and make us more resilient

Martin Seligman, a leader in the field of Positive Psychology, wrote, “when we take time to notice the things that go right – it means we’re getting a lot of little rewards throughout the day”

While money is certainly ‘up there as a must-have’, recognition and appreciation for a job well done, go a long way in motivating people to do better. Words and phrases like ‘great job’, ‘well done, and ‘I sincerely appreciate’, are all worth remembering and using, in our day-to-day life.

Over the years, I have spoken to a number of friends and colleagues on this topic, and many have felt, that more often than not, they are taken for granted, as they rarely receive any form of gratitude for a job well done.

So here is the question- are we becoming more callous & less sensitive to the world and people around us?

Taxi drivers, food and other delivery workers, the people who work in your house and office as support staff, the petrol pump attendant, the security guards at the gate or in our buildings, are all people we see daily, but who we tend to treat more like ‘expendable commodities’.

When was the last time you asked any of these people their names?

By this I don’t mean you have to go around asking any and everyone their name, but what about your regulars? Are the ones you pass or interact with daily closer to home or at your place of work? Care to hazard a guess? The answer could surprise you.

Have you ever asked about their lives, their families, or their well-being?

I never used to do it enough either, but have made a concerted effort over the last couple of years to do better.

However, this is no sermon from the mount, nor am I attempting to display a holier than thou attitude! All I am saying is that we must show gratitude more often.

Genuine encouragement, reassurance, empathy, and compassion should never go out of style

A genuine heartfelt thank you, along with a smile, if it’s not too much to ask for, costs nothing, but it can make someone else’s day a little better!

Want to give it a try starting today?
